COMPOSTING IS VERY FUN
(These conversations and characters are entirely fictitional)
Nicole: I luv gardening and also make my own fertilizer for all my plants. And it's so much fun to compost that in itself it's a great hobby even if you don't keep any plant at all.
AhGer: I know what you mean. But compost can buy from the shop what, why must make yourself? .
AhBoy: Of cos anything oso can buy from shop, but if make your own compost, can save money. Peepur who keep many plants need ferlizer for all the plants, especially when got a lot of plants. Then buy is very expensive. If can make your own ferlizer is best.
AhGer: You mean what? Compost is same as ferlizer?
Nicole: I always regard compost as the superior fertilizer to use for plants rather than synthetic fertilizers which contain man-made chemicals. Compost is organic and can be easily made from our kitchen waste. I always keep my kitchen waste for composting instead of thrashing it. Hence I am never short of compost. That's why you can see my plants and flowers are so beautiful.
AhBoy: Actually I oso like to make compost. But sometimes, I do wrongly, then the compost can become very smelly until peepur can't tahan.
AhGer: How you make your compost?
AhBoy: If you cook at home or eat at home, then sure got leftover food and scraps one. Then you don't throw all away. Just throw away the wet-wet stuff and oso all the meat and bones. Meat and bones cannot use for compost.
AhGer: Then keep what to use for compost?
AhBoy: Keep all the vegetable scraps, all the fruit skins, prawn shells, coffee and tea bags, rice, beans and many more. As long as grown in nature can use in compost.
AhGer: You mean put all the things inside container then let them rot?
AhBoy: Last time I do that, but oso cannot anyhow do one. Must oso know little bit science then can.
AhGer: Wa, so cheemology one meh? I tot just let it rot can oredy.
Nicole: AhBoy is right. Although composting is all about rotting, doing it properly and correctly is very important, otherwise the result will be disappointing to say the least.
AhGer: Wa really ah? Now I oso gian-gian want to learn some expert composting.
AhBoy: I agree with Nicole... last time I make the same mistake of overwet compost until peepur come complain, say my compost stink to high heaven.
Nicole: Yes, if done correctly, there should be no foul smell at all through the whole composting process. Instead, there will be a pleasant characteristic smell if any. But to be sure, few composters are able to achieve that. For instance, many tumbler users can vouch for the fact that their tumbled compost do stink to high heaven when they open their tumbler. For this reason, many have given up on composting after starting to do it.
AhGer: Wa, composting need to buy tumbler ah?
AhBoy: No need lah... can use any container or bucket for composting. Of cors if you have plenty scraps you must get big container lor.
Nicole: For composting in an apartment, any suitably-sized container or bin with a lid should be fine. Small compost bins are easier to manage than larger setups.
AhGer: Then how long must wait then the compost ready to use?
Nicole: For a well-maintained apartment-sized bin, it may just need a couple of months for the compost to be ready. But for a large bin or pile in the garden or backyard where the scraps used are in big chunks, it can take many months or a year or even longer to decompost. That's the way in nature too, but with practical knowledge and expertise, humans can expedite the process muchly.
AhBoy: When I do compost, I no need worry about cacurating CN latio and all dat nonsen... becos hor, as long as I try keep my compost dry, my compost will be super. I only use small pieces cardboard to mix until compost become not wet. If it not wet, I no need add any cardboard. But my style is I like to put the compost to dry first in the sun. This trick I learn is very kilat one. But I know got some peepur tink about CN latio until can't sleep... all so goondu.
AhGer: Hualan Ahboy, you are can dah... didn't know you so experienced in composting... I lespect you.
Nicole: Experienced composters will eventually come to realize that good composting is really an art. But the art and skill can come only after the underlying scientific principles have been grasped and understood.
AhBoy: Ya, composting is need to learn the cheemology of it one. Is not so simpur as just let it rot. Is same like a shef in restoran, not everyone can be a good shef, but anyone can make mehgee mee... hahaha.
